Industrialisation in the flour-production world arrived at the hands of the Austro-Hungarian system, representing great advantages compared to prior mills. It was disseminated throughout Europe because white flour could be obtained using this system for the very first time.

One of the special features of this complex system is its verticality, through which the wheat, flour and other products follow a circuit that drives them from one machine to another, in a continuous elevation and descent of floors.

When you visit the Farinera de Castelló d’Empúries, your tour will include the manufacturing spaces, where you will learn about the three phases of the process:

  • cleaning, when the impurities are separated from the wheat.
  • conditioning, which prepares the wheat for milling.
  • and milling in itself, when the wheat is ground and the flour is gradually and completely separated from the bran.
